An Arabic technique — today practised by very few
Our handmade ceramic coasters are made using a ceramic technique of Arabic origin, cultivated in Portugal for over 500 years — today practised by only a handful of craftspeople in the world. The pattern of each coaster is carved into a plaster mould. Clay pressed into the mould takes on a precise relief — the fine edges of the pattern become natural boundaries between colours. Then, using small pipettes, we apply glaze by hand — colour by colour, section by section. It is work that demands focus and patience. Slight differences between pieces are proof of craftsmanship, not a defect.
